Port of Visakhapatnam is one of the leading major ports of India. It is located almost midway between Kolkata on the North and Chennai towards the South on the East Coast. The ideal position of the port provides it with the advantage of facilitating “Act East Policy”. The port contributes significantly to the maritime trade with the economies in the Asia and Asia Pacific regions at economic cost besides economies in the Persian Gulf, Europe, Americas and Africa. Port of Visakhapatnam is notified as a Gateway port for the EXIM cargo of Nepal.

The port started in 1933 transformed itself into a mega major port. With a capacity to handle more than 125 million tonnes per annum with 21 Inner Harbour berths and 7 Outer Harbour berths including (1 SPM Berth), it is capable of handling all types of cargoes including iron ore, coal, crude oil, petroleum products, LPG, fertilizers, dry cargoes, liquid cargoes and containers.

Port of Visakhapatnam has super cape handling capability and the deepest container terminal among major ports. The port has fully mechanized facilities for handling coal, iron ore and Alumina besides liquid and container cargoes.

The Port plays a catalytic role for the economic growth by catering to the key industries in the petroleum, steel, power and fertilizer sectors besides other manufacturing industries in its hinterland. A quantity of 69.84 Million Tonnes of cargo was handled by the port during the FY 2020-21. and also 72.72 Million Tonnes during the year 2019-20.

Efficient cargo evacuation infrastructure is developed by the port for transportation of cargo by rail and road. The Port owns and operates a Railway network of about 186 Kms., which is linked to the South Central Railway and East Coast Railway of the Indian Railways. Nearly 46% of the cargo handled at the port is moved by rail during the year 2020-21.

The Port is well connected to the Chennai-Howrah NH-16 by a 4 lane connectivity road for movement of cargo towards the North and South.

The port has won many accolades in recognition of its services.

Port of Visakhapatnam is placed in the top slot “Good” category in Port Performance by Dun & Bradstreet as part of study instituted by NITI Aayog engaging 700 respondents pan India, on qualitative and quantitative aspects of business transactions at ports.

Port of Visakhapatnam is declared as 2nd cleanest port for the third year in succession by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways during survey done by Quality Council of India under Swachh Bharat Mission.

The port has emerged as winner in port service sector for outstanding achievements in Environment Management in July 2019. The GreenTech Foundation has presented “Gold” award to the port for outstanding achievements in Safety Management in services sector in November 2018.

Port of Visakhapatnam has become self-sufficient by generating the required electricity for its use. The port has installed a 10 MW Photo Voltaic Solar Energy Project and also utilising its rooftop spaces for generation of solar power. In recognition of its efforts, Port of Visakhapatnam has been adjudged as winner in “Outstanding Renewable Energy User” under service sector in India as part of “Green Energy Awards, 2018”

Port of Visakhapatnam is the only Major Port in India to have three international accreditations for quality environment and occupational health and safety management systems – ISO – 9001, 14001 and OHSAS 18001. The Port is also ISPS compliant.

The port enjoys excellent synergies with the existing 7 PPP operators, shipping agents, stevedores, Customs, Railways, CONCOR, CFSs and other stakeholders in developing an ideal eco system enabling cost effective services to the customers.
